WHAT DOES HE DO? • - Assist the Sovereign Grand Commander by issuing financial support to our Brethren who are in need of assistance. This is a key part of our Supreme Council Vision: “We will strive to be a fraternity that fullfills our Masonic obligation to care for our members.”
PROCEDURE FOR ASSISTANCE • If you hear or know of any Brother who is in of financial assistance inform your Valley Secretary, any Active Member of Supreme Council or your State Deputy. • They will want to know the circumstances of why assistance is needed i.e. loss of income, illness, home foreclosure, natural disaster. They may even request you to further investigate the circumstances.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT • The State Deputy will inform the Sovereign Grand Commander of the circumstances as to why the Brother needs assistance. The Commander may also ask for an amount of assistance that the Brother will need. • The Commander will then inform the Grand Almoner to issue assistance to the Brother in need.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE • In most instances after the Commander has approved an amount of assistance is needed a check is issued within 24 hours. • The check may go direct to the Brother or to a Valley Secretary an Active Member or the State Deputy for delivery to the Brother in need.
HOW MUCH ASSISTANCE IS PROVIDED • It depends on the circumstances of the Brother who needs assistance to get him through his immediate needs. Some may need only a few hundred dollars and others may need thousands of dollars to assist them. • Multiple and long term assistance is not provided
EXAMPLES • Ill Benny L. Grisham, 33°, Deputy for Illinois will tell you about assistance given to Brethren in Illinois after the flooding there in June of 2011 • Ill David A. Glattly, 33°, Deputy for New Jersey will tell you of some recent assistance checks issued to Brethren in New Jersey.
WHERE DO FUNDS COME FROM • Your Supreme Council has been very fortunate to have received several bequests the proceeds of which have been placed in the Almoner’s Fund. Also the Almoner’s Fund is now a part of the Annual Blue Envelope Appeal. • Through these resources the Supreme Council Almoner’s Fund has given more than $200,000.00 to Brother Masons in need.
