Peer Mediation. What is peer mediation?. Mediation is a program which gives you a designated time to talk issues out with your friends during the school day. It gives you the opportunity to work things out before the situation gets worse and without the drama of others’ getting involved.

  1. Peer Mediation

  2. What is peer mediation? • Mediation is a program which gives you a designated time to talk issues out with your friends during the school day. It gives you the opportunity to work things out before the situation gets worse and without the drama of others’ getting involved.

  3. Peer mediators are students your age that conduct the mediation process. They do not take sides or make decisions for their peers in conflict. Peer mediators help the students in conflict listen to each others points of view, focus on the problem, and create their own solutions.

  4. It takes cooperation and understanding to resolve any conflicts. • Peer mediation is based on the belief that in order to resolve conflicts constructively, those with the conflict must be willing to do as follows: • Stay calm and control their anger, frustration or other strong feelings • Focus on the problem and not blame the other person. • Accurately state their wants and feelings • Respect and work to understand different points of view. • Cooperate and create solutions that meet the needs of everyone involved.

  5. Mediation is Confidential • Confidential: The mediation can be discussed in with the mediation coordinator, but is otherwise confidential. The exception is if mediators feel the case is ‘too hot to handle’. It should be explained to the people in the introduction that under some circumstances, including if they are told about something that ‘will harm you or others’ they will inform the mediation coordinator.

  6. Mediation is Voluntary • Voluntary: Cases can be referred by teachers, but mediation is voluntary, so both people must choose to be there.

  9. What are the alternatives to mediation? • Physical fighting • Ignoring the conflict • Yelling • Drama • Hatred • Gossip and rumors • Hurt feelings and friendships • Unhealthy school environment

  10. Let’s do more practice! • Groups of three • Will be asked to role play in front of class.

  11. Discussion • What are the Pros and Cons to a mediation? • Terms to discuss : fairness, equal, compromise, peaceful solutions
