  1. YIKES Benthic Invertebrate Survey “Bug Hunt” Riverview HS

  2. Our Sampling Site“Frank & Poet Creek”… but just where on the creek you ask?

  3. Our Location(By the Golf Course)

  4. The Tools of The Trade & basic procedure • Waders – you know you want to try them on! • Nets & Buckets – collect the water and mucky … uhm … stuff • Pour into trays for study … the fun begins!

  5. Student scientists pick around the muck & search for the lil’ critters • Use tiny suction droppers, forceps … whatever works! • Place lil’ dudes into ice cube trays – separate by type • Keep Count & record on invertebrate data sheet … UP NEXT 

  6. Some examples from the benthic identification packet …

  7. Why does our site rate so low? HYPOTHESIS: • Not really a very natural type setting/environment • Notice the lack of trees, bushes, fallen branches, packs of leaves, rocks, etc. • All things that little critters like in their environment • Invertebrates use the above for breeding, making a home, protection, etc. • Let’s take another look at our location 
