3. Some Activities Supported by Plant Health Information Pest Risk Assessments (PRAs)
National Identification
Urgents (supplement action/no action lists)
Export Certification Specialists
Field Personnel (Regions & State)
Trade Negotiations
Training Foreign Service Nationals
Permits
4. Pest Risk Assessments List of required references for background research for Commodity Risk Assessments (for imports)
Core information resources are used as a starting point from which further investigating proceeds to produce a comprehensive PRA
5. National Identification Staff (NIS) Used by pest and disease identifiers located at ports and inspection stations to find info about intercepted pests – i.e. biology, hosts, illustrations
Used by identifiers to develop pathways, pests sheets, and other technical documents for Port Supervisors
6. Urgents Part of the National Identification Services (NIS) Staff activities.
If pest found on a shipment a determination of treatment (from the action/no-action list) is made. If organism not on the list and personnel on site unable to make a determination, call made to HQ for quick decision.
This activity allows or disallows release of cargo
7. Export Certification Specialists Issue and coordinate phytosanitary certificates in their subject areas and geographic regions of responsibility
Respond to requests from Federal, State, and County Representatives
Use resources for biology, pest-host relationship, and verify sources for the distribution
8. Trade Negotiations The Crop Protection Compendium is cited by APHIS and potential trade partners
All participants are working with the same data
APHIS works with CAB International to update and change distribution information when it has changed or was published in error
9. Training Foreign Service Nationals PPQ is involved in Capacity Building
Work with agriculturalist to ID pests in their country
Confirm or refute distribution in their countries
10. Permits Required for import and transport of organism within the U.S. for research
Information resources are used to make quick supported and documents decisions
11. Contractors PPQ Uses contractors to perform PRAs, special projects
Same authoritative information sources means all (contracting officer, contractor, reviewers, and staff) have the same information, no discrepancies
Promotes consistency and reliability and allows discussion to confirm or refute data
12. Primary Information Library Resources for PPQ Programs CAB Abstracts (UMC)
BIOSIS (UMC)
AGRICOLA (UMC)
Zoological Record (UMC)
SCOPUS (UMC has Web of Science)
Crop Protection Compendium
Forestry Compendium
Distribution Maps – Plant Pests, Plant Diseases
Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria

Subject Resource Guide – Agriculture http://www.lib.umd.edu/guides/Agriculture.html
Plant Diseases Resource Guide - http://www.lib.umd.edu/guides/plant_diseases.html
14. CAB ABSTRACTS Major bibliographic information service providing access to the world's agricultural literature – it includes 46 subject abstract journals
APHIS PPQ most frequently used abstracts:
AgBiotech News & Information, Agroforestry, Biocontrol News & Information, Forest Products, Forestry, Nematological, Postharvest News and Information, Review of Agricultural Entomology, Review of Plant Pathology, Weed Abstracts. APHIS has access to CAB Abstracts 1910 to present.
UMC has access to all subject abstracts via
CAB Abstracts 1973 to present
15. AGRICOLA National Agricultural Library’s (NAL) database indexes select serial titles. Collection strong on indexing USDA and Extension Service publications. Heavy emphasis on US Agriculture, but NAL is Premiere Agricultural Library in the World.
Only indexes materials owned by NAL
16. BIOSIS Previews & Biological Abstracts, and Zoological Record BIOSIS life sciences research and relevant cross disciplines– 1926 to present – good source for biotech information
Zoological Record covers aspects of zoology from biodiversity and the environment to taxonomy. This is a useful source for taxonomic name changes.
17. SCOPUS Search Engine operated by Elsevier Publishing in Partnership with ScienceDirect (Elsevier’s online journals platform).
SCOPUS operates like Web of Science by searching multidisciplinary databases, web pages and the search engine vets for technical content, and patents.
Also does notes number of times cited and offers links to the article - a similar concept to Web of Science & Current Contents Who cites Whom.
18. Crop Protection Compendium CAB International has produced an interactive encyclopedic compendium resource for plant health. It is a database that draws together scientific information on all aspects of crop protection. http://www.cabi.org/compendia/cpc/
