Scope of Proposed Project (802.15.4) This project will define the PHY and MAC specifications for low data rate wireless connectivity with fixed, portable and moving devices with no battery or very limited battery consumption requirements typically operating in the Personal Operating Space (POS) of 10 meters. It is foreseen that depending on the application that a longer range at a lower data rate may be an acceptable trade-off. It is the intent of this project to work toward a level of coexistence with other wireless devices in conjunction with Coexistence Task Groups, such as 802.15.2.and 802.11/ETSI-BRAN/MMAC 5GSG. Purpose of Proposed Project (802.15.4) To provide a standard for ultra low complexity, ultra low cost, ultra low power consumption and low data rate wireless connectivity among inexpensive devices. The raw data rate will be high enough (maximum of 250kbs) to satisfy a set of simple needs such as interactive toys, but scaleable down to the needs of sensor and automation needs (20kbps or below) for wireless communications. Applications beyond 802.15.4 Applications requiring mobility faster than 11 mph, such as: • Tire pressure • Assets in vehicles (in-car communications) • Drive-by • Drop boxes • Drive-by AMR • Toll booths Applications requiring robustness or fewer retransmissions in multipath environments, such as: • Industrial mission-critical • Airplanes • Ships / engine rooms • Gaming • New WINA alliance one example of this need Applications requiring ranging accuracy better than 0.5 meters, such as: • Asset tracking (active RFID) • Personnel tracking • Motion detection • Automatic network installation Pat Kinney, Kinney Consulting LLC
