  2. Programme Outline • Free Choice Courses 20 credits Level 1 • Introduction to Self-Directed Study 10 credits Level 1 • Directed Study I 30 credits Level 1 • Directed Study 2 30 Credits Level 2 • Directed Study 3 30 credits Level 3

  3. Free Choice Courses • Courses for the Public – no entry requirements • Weekly and Full Day courses • 20 hour course carries 5 credits • Attendance requirement – two-thirds of course • Completion of Record of Learning • Participation in integrated assessment

  4. Introduction to Self-Directed Study • Reflection on learning styles and personal preferences • Use of Information Management model • Preparation for Learning Contract • Assessed by portfolio

  5. Directed Study I and II • Structured through the Learning Contract • 5 hours individual tuition • 40 hours class attendance • 3 assignments equivalent to 3 x 2,500word essays

  6. Directed Study III • 10 hours individual tuition • 10,000 word dissertation

  7. Student profile • Currently small numbers • Introductory course draws all ages from 25 upwards • Directed Study attracts older people with clear aims • Subject focus may be work related • Assignments can have practical purpose

Special interest topics attract non-traditional learners No initial commitment to long-term study Potential for negotiating attendance at mainstream academic lectures Potential for transfer of credits Programme currently under review Has attracted small numbers only Low completion rates Opportunities and Threats
