Jesus In The Old Testament! In Christophanies as the Angel of the LORD
2,000 Years ago! • * Early believers had no New Testament • * All discussion with others had to be from the Old Testament (Jewish Tenach) or preaching of the Apostles, but proving their claims was backed up by the O.T. • * First Objection: “You Christians have three gods, we Jews have only One!
Where Did That come fRom?Deuteronomy 6:4 -- שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יהוה אֶחָד׃ “Schma Israel, adoniElohenu. Adoniechad.”“Hear, O Israel, the LORd our g_d. The lord is one.”
room for the trinity!“echad” used here = “many as one”Gen. 1:1 – “in the beginning, gods created…”gen. 1:5 – “…there was evening and morning, one day.”gen. 2:24 – “…They shall become one flesh.”ezra 2:64 – “…42,360 came together as one...” (& neh.Ch 7)
NO room for the trinity!“yachid” not used here = “it’s a singularity”If God was a single personality, He would have used “yachid” and not “echad”
Genesis 1:5 – “There was evening and there was morning…” two things! It does not say, “the first day” It says “one day”this is from the hebrew bible! Not the niv, kjv, nasb, nbc, cnn… There is only one text we can use! You can’t say, “oh, that’s a different text!
Genesis 2:24 -- tells us a man will leave his father and mother and join his wife “and the two shall become one flesh!”so why do I need two chairs, two plates, two orders of food and yet get one bill?A family unit is one in god’s eyes! You destroy one you destroy the cell, you bring in a third, you have disaster!
When you order one egg, do you specify, “without the shell, but with the yolk and the egg white please?
Also, three Primary colors can be additive(asinLight) orsubtractive (as in paint). The three colors can worktogether in varying intensities to make millions of hues! Or, Equally to make one, (white for light) or (black) for paint!
The word for God is “elohim”the “im” ending is in a plural form“Let us make man in our image” (Gen. 1:26)to whom did he speak? To man, he was not created yet. To monkeys, I hardly think so!Rabbinical thought says angels! But they were also created and do not have power to create but sang for joy over what god was doing!
God spoke to someone equal to himself! Someone in image and in likeness and in power to create! The Rabbis claim he spoke to a mirror, to his reflection!Really?God spoke to god! That’s hebrew grammar, not theology!“And the LORD said, the man has become like one of Usknowing good and evil…” (gen. 3:22)
Now for thecritical question! How many beings, entities, or persons are there in god?
We know of two now because god used the plural to speak to another person. But, how many all together? Two, three, Twenty five, seventy, 300 million? What does the Bible say?
“In The Beginning “gods”…and the spirit of god was hovering over the waters.” so, the spirit was there before creation! He is equal to god and responds as a person!
The spirit can be grieved – (Isaiah 63:10)can become your enemy – (isaiah 63:10b)Gives guidance and rest – (isaiah 63:11-14)can be taken away during O.T. – (Ps. 51:11)you can flee from him – (ps. 139:7-12)can’t be directed by man – (Isaiah 40:13)=====================================as christians we can say jesus related to the spirit as a person: “he will do…” not it, but he, a person!
There is more evidence of another god-like person וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תוּכַל לִרְאֹת אֶת־פָּנָי כִּי לֹא־יִרְאַנִי הָאָדָם וָחָי׃ “and he said, ‘thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.’” (exodus 33:20)here we see god as the speaker and he says that you cannot see his face and survive and live to tell about it.But…,“And the LORD spoke unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend…”(exodus 33:11)
Is there a problem between these two verses? In vs. 11 he speaks face to face, in vs. 20 if he did that moseswould die!Later in psalm 2 and proverbs 30 we see they are God the son and God the father but that hasn’t been revealed yet to us at this point.Build your case. use the words you have at hand; one god you can’t see or you will die, another is his spirit, and a third one thatyou can see and still live!
So, now we have these three personalities, beings, persons. We need to know how many more there might be, or are there only three? We need a limiting verse to tell us the total number of persons in the godhead.
Isaiah the prophet gives us this limiting verse in Chapter 48:12-16the different names of jesus show up in isaiah cover to cover! 13“Hearken unto me, o jacob and israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
“My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand has spanned the heavens:…”
this is the god who had a direct hand in our creation!==========================================================================================“schma Israel, AdoniElohenu, adoniechad!”What does all this mean?In this one god there are three persons expressing themselves differently toward the creation:* one we cannot see or we die!* One who is a spirit we can’t see!* one who will speak to us face to face and yet, we will live!
If I want to know god it’s enough to isolate one since each represents the fullness of god.Not the one that I will die if I see Him!Not the one I can’t see!So, I will search the Bible for the one I can see face to face and live. To know him is to know god!
“abram was 99 and god appeared to abram…” (Genesis 17:1)the person of god we are allowed to see, Yahweh, appeared to Abram. What happened? He saw god face to face!“…and said unto him, ‘I am the almighty god [El shaddai]…’”El shaddai is a personal name of god! He is the all sufficient one to provide for abram. In Genesis 48:3-4, jacob tells joseph that el shaddai appeared to him and gave blessings only god could give! El shaddai is god himself!
in exodus 6:2-3 the plot thickens.“And god spoke unto moses, ‘I amtheLORD: and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto jacob, by the name of god almighty [el shaddai] but by my name jehovah [yahwehor LORD] I did not make myself known to them!’”here we see that moses learns that god almighty or el shaddai spoke through a mediator, also god, whose name was laterrevealed to moses as “I am that I am,” (jehovah).el shaddai appeared to abraham, not as a camel , mountain, or big spirit, but as a person!
El Shaddaiwas there genesis 17, but now in chapter 18, approaching abraham’s tent, are three persons. This does not represent the trinity!Abraham rushes out, bowed and says, “my lord, if I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:”
he’s in shock, because one of these heRecognized as the el shaddaihe had just spoken with in Chapter 17!
Another amazing appearance of the god we can see and not die was made to sampson’s parents.the record is in judges, chapter 13.when the encounter ends, manoahasks the angel of the Lord for his name to honor him when the promise of a son comes true.“but the angel of the Lord said to him, ‘why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful”’
“and the angel of the lord ascended in the flame of the altar…” and Sampson’s Parents Saw The Lord, yet they lived!
God has take on human form for our sake! Not only as a redeemer, but as one we can see and embracewhen he returns for us, and later to jerusalem, his children will be welcomed with open armsmaranatha, even so, come Lord jesus!
