LGBT History Month 2014 • The purpose of LGBT History Month is to celebrate the achievements of LGBT people throughout history. • At Neatherd we celebrate everyone’s achievements – but sometimes we need to focuson the certain groups of people. People who have been treated badly or oppressed throughout history. • LGBT History Month challenges heteronormativitywithin the curriculum.

But why talk about it in school? • Homophobia is endemic in our schools. • The Stonewall Report has proved that over 95% of students hear homophobic comments in school. • Around 2/3 of out LGBT students are bullied. • Many go on to leave education earlier than planned. • The attack on the Trans community more broadly in society – Lucy Meadows.

  4. Benjamin Britten • Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft in 1913. He was born on the 22nd November, the feast day of Cecilia, the patron saint of music. His mother, a keen amateur singer, hoped he would –after Bach, Beethoven and Brahms become the “Fouth B”.

  5. Benjamin Britten • Indeed, Benjamin became a global musical figure. In just 63 busy years, he wrote some of the best classical music of the twentieth century. He was hailed as one of the all-time great opera composers, and – with his partner, singer Peter Pears – performed around the world.

  6. Benjamin Britten • He was a progressive cultural figure too and was ahead of his time on issues including pacifism, homosexuality and the role of artists in their communities.

  8. Azealia Banks • Azealia Banks was born in 1991 and is an American, rapper, singer and songwriter. She grew up in Harlem. • She topped the NME’s cool list in 2011. • Her first album is due to come out in March 2014 called “Broke with expensive taste”.

  9. Azealia Banks • She is openly bisexual but is opposed to labelling. She told the New York Times: “I’m not trying to be the bisexual, lesbian rapper. I don’t live on other people’s terms.”

  11. Reflection • How would you react if one of your friends “came out”? Are you someone people would feel comfortable speaking to? • Is it fair that the achievements of certain groups of people have been hidden throughout history? • Do we do all we can to include everyone in our school community?
