The life cycle of the salmon 6th Class Kiltartan National School
Salmon belong to the same family of fish as the trout. Most kinds of salmon live in salt water, or migrate between rivers and the sea. Many people like to eat salmon, so the fish is also grown in fish farms. Usual ways to make food out of salmon are smoking, cold smoking and graving.
Salmon are a well known fish in Ireland • It has a lot of different stages in the cycle • They would start off as an egg under the gravel • Then they would move onto alvenis • After that they go to Parr • Then they go onto a smolt • And then the final stage a adult salmon
Once the salmon have completed the cycle they go back to where they were born and lay eggs. • The cycle starts again
where THEY live? • Most salmon are anadromous fish, meaning they are born in freshwater (rivers or streams), travel to and live much of their lives in salt water and return to freshwater to spawn. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and up to 50% of other species die within a few weeks.
