  2. Prevalenceoftobacco in Portugal 1.78 million people currently smoke cigarettes • 20.0% of the population over 15 years • 23.5% men • 10.9% women • 25.9% young people aged 25-34 years smoke • 34.0% boys • 18.0% girls Fontes: INE/INSA, Inquérito Nacional de Saúde 2014

Why should nurses address smoking? • 60 000 nurses in Portugal • If each nurse helps one smoker to quit • many more patientswouldquit smoking • We can make a big difference in your patients’ lives! Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals and essential for the implementation of Article 14 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

Nurses Helping Smokers Quit • Tobacco Information abounds • Tobacco associated health risks are well know since mid 20th century • Effective ways to help patients quit smoking are known • Health care systems should provide cessation resources and services • Consensus achieved • e-cig should be equally addressed • In general Nurses are ill-prepared to help address this chronic illness. • Lack of knowledge and skills • Not prioritized in nursing education • Nurses should receive education about tobacco control • in school • In practice settings

  6. Building capacity among nurses International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care • the mission to enhance access to cancer prevention and care through nursing best practices. Project: Building Capacity of Portuguese Nurses to be Tobacco Control Champions To support 50-100 nurses who attend a Training-of-trainers on tobacco dependence treatment in implementing additional trainings at their home institution Workshop program To recruit 150 nurses to participate in including an online baseline survey and an online 3-months survey post implementation of the program online educational program

Training-of-Trainer: 1 day workshop Recruiting participants (goal 25 nurses per workshop) Topics: • Epidemiology of tobacco dependence • E-cigarettes • Smoking and oncology • Tobacco dependence in selected groups (pregnant, adolescents, multiple dependencies, mentally ill) • Treatment of tobacco dependence • Implementing the training at your hospital

  9. e-learning program 20-minute e-learning courses offered via webcast Will be on the role of nurses in smoking cessation interventions Will be on smoking cessation in oncology settings Online informed consent and short pre-test of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to tobacco control and smoking cessation interventions will be completed immediately before access to the e-learning courses Online 3-month post-test, to the e-learning program
