  2. It’s a new day • We are all in this together: • OR • Environmental Services • Sterile Processing • Infection Prevention/Control • Success depends upon outcomes – best achieved through a team effort

  5. Paradigm Shift • In the past employees gained status by hoarding/protecting knowledge • Today employees become more valuable by seeking opportunities to work with others and to exchange knowledge

  6. The New Way Teamwork yields sweet rewards

Barriers to Team • Departments have poor understanding of each other’s work and responsibilities • Lack of appreciation for contribution • Image problem • Minimal face to face interactions • Interactions often negative • IP – dept of one or two • SPD – location and access • Human behavior is often unpredictable

  10. Collaboration • SPD part of what is happening in arena of quality reporting • Make SPD staff aware of requirements for reporting SSI • Start with abdominal hysterectomy and colon surgery • 2012 reporting requirement • Total joints • High interest

  11. Collaboration • Ensure IP/SSI data disseminated • Personalize an infection • Share what you know • Infection • What types of organisms • What causes infection • Who gets an infection • What are some preventive measures that can be quantified

Collaboration – Share What You Know On the job • Get to know each other • Orientation – time with each other • Become comfortable in unfamiliar environment • Off the job • Invite to professional organization meetings and seminars • Annual workshop • Offer to speak or present poster at meetings

  13. Collaboration • Lobby for inclusion: • OR committee • Patient safety committee • Form joint committee for one project purpose

Collaboration • Project • Choose something small enough to be able to achieve success but big enough to matter • Establish responsibilities • Establish communication protocols • Stay on top of this • Cancel meeting only for TRUE emergency • Demonstrate seriousness of purpose • Celebrate together
