Introduction The world tells us to look out for number one while God demands humility from us (Micah 6:6-8; 1 Peter 5:5-6; Eph. 4:1-2; Col. 3:12). Humility- “not rising far from the ground...of a low degree, lowly in spirit...”having a humble opinion of oneself, a deep sense of one’s (moral) littleness” (Thayer). Let us learn to be humble like Christ. (Matthew 11:29; Philippians 2:3-8)
Learn to be Humble like Christ Don’t be selfish (Phil. 2:3, 6-7; 2 Tim. 3:2) Don’t be conceited (Phil. 2:3; Rom. 12:16) Value other people above yourself (Phil. 2:3, 2 Cor. 8:9) Look to other people’s interests (Phil. 2:4, 8) If you are putting into practice these things, you will not fall prey to the pride of life. (1 John 2:15-17, 29)
Worship God with Humility (Phil. 3:3ff) Don’t view others with contempt in your righteousness like the Pharisees, be humble like the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14). Don’t worship to receive praise from men or desire to be noticed by them (Matt. 6:1-7) Pray, sing, give, remember His death, and receive God’s word with honest hearts. (Luke 8:15; 1 Cor. 14:15; Gal. 5:19; 2 Cor. 9:7; 1 Cor. 11:26ff; Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 4:4)
Serve God with Humility (Mt. 20:28) We must submit to Him if we are going to serve others (John 13:12-17; 1 Peter 5:5-6). By submitting to one another, we serve others. (Ephesians 5:21ff) We serve others by being holy (Acts 20:18-21). We promote unity among Christians based on truth (John 17:17ff; Ephesians 4:1-3). We rescue souls with a humble attitude. (2 Timothy 2:24-26; Galatians 6:1-2)
The Reward of Humility (Exaltation) The poor in spirit possess the kingdom of God (Matthew 5:3; 18:1-4) God gives grace to the humble and will exalt them at the proper time (1 Peter 5:5-6). God will remember, honor, and vindicate them. (Psalm 9:11-12; Proverbs 18:12) They will be exalted to meet the Lord in the air and always be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18)
Conclusion The challenge of being humble is that once you think you are, pride can come in and cause you to lose your soul (Proverbs 16:18). Through the Lord’s grace, mercy, and love the apostle Paul learned humility (1 Tim. 1:12ff). If we remain humble in our worship and service to God we will be rewarded with heaven. Humble yourself in obedience to the Lord or be restored right now (Heb. 5:8-9; 2 Cor. 6:2).
