Origins in Middle East Ottoman Empire • By the late 19th century, once-great Ottoman Empire in decline, losing outlying provinces • Euro powers meddled in Ottoman affairs • Reaction: Young Turks conspired to force a constitution on the Sultan, wanted centralized rule, Turkification of minorities and modernizing reforms • Turks turned to Germany for assistance in modernizing armed forces
3 main causes of WWI • Nationalism • Systems of alliances and military plans • Germany’s desire to dominate Europe
1. Nationalism • Deeply rooted in European culture • Served to unite individual nations while undermining large multiethnic empires • B/c of the spread of nationalism, most people viewed war as a crusade for liberty or as revenges for past injustices • The well-to-do believed that war could heal the class divisions in their societies
2. Systems of alliances and military plans • Euro powers divided into two alliances • Triple Alliance • Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy • Triple Entente • Britain, France, Russia • Military alliance system was accompanied by inflexible mobilization plans that depended on railroads to move troops according to precise schedules • All of these alliances were instituted under secret treaties
3. German desire to dominate Europe • Von Schlieffen Plan (ca. 1905) • Designed to mobilize troops and supplies as quickly as possible to fight war on multiple fronts • Necessary to fight France (W) and Russia (E) • Militarization across Europe led to Germans and others just hoping a war would start
Catalyst: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand • Who? The heir to the throne of A-H Empire • June 28, 1914: bombing attempt on the Archduke, rolled off back of car, hit an officer/bystanders. • Later on the 28th, they drove to the hospital to visit took a wrong turn and GavriloPrincip (19) shot into the car & killed FF
Catalyst: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand • A-H declared war on Serbia (who was aligned w/Russia) on June 28, 1914. • Diplomats, statesmen and monarchs quickly lost control • Alliance system in combination w/rigidly scheduled mobilization plans meant that war was inevitable
