Copy of baby’s footprint taken for public record Baby’s family name labeled on wrists or ankles and the mother’s wrist Right after birth
60 minutes of delivery -> drops or antiseptic are put into eyes to prevent infection Vitamin K shot -> needed for blood clotting Hearing tests -> in some hospitals Blood sample -> for sickle cell anemia and other conditions Later tests
Typical hospital stay -> 12 hours to 3 days Why might jaundice delay a newborn’s release from the hospital? LATER TESTS
Bonding -> forming emotional ties between parent and child Most facilities have changed their policies to allow bonding right away (delay other procedures) Baby placed in mother’s arms or abdomen to hear familiar heartbeat and voice Bonding & attachment
Breastfeeding -> may begin right away Colostrum -> easy for baby to digest and rich in antibodies to protect against disease. Clear or yellow in color Bonding & attachment
Ensure that baby has birth certificate Social Security Number Legal documents
