Northeast State Technical Community CollegeDSP RedesignDSPR 0870 Basic and Developmental Reading
Problems to Solve • High failure and withdraw rate in DSPR 0870-Baisc and Developmental Reading (34%-45% semester average) • Hindrance to students’ timely progression through college and negative impact on retention • “One size fits all”; instructor centered; lack of individual assistance • High cost for both the college and students
Goals of Redesign • Increase student success rate • Create an environment for active, student- centered learning • Provide individual assistance as needed • Create a flexible learning mode • Reduce cost for college and students
The Redesign • Reading Emporium—Pilot with 50 students • Establishment and use of a reading center • Use of Web-based interactive and modularized learning software • Self-paced learning within a set timeframe • Mandatory weekly hours in the Reading Center • Individual assistance from the instructor and RC assistants • Online Learning Communities through D2L and Tegrity
Cost Reduction • Larger sections of the course • Use of technology to free faculty from course management tasks • No adjunct faculty hired as instructors • Use of reading center assistants • Lower failure/repeat rate
Challenges and Opportunities • Learning curve for the new web-based software for faculty and RC assistants • Inadequate orientation and training of students • Inadequate training of reading center assistants • Data management for student progress monitoring and intervention
