  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH Do you enjoy eating out in a restaurant? If yes, where do you like to go? Why do you like to eat there? Are there other places besides restaurants you enjoy visiting and ordering food or drinks? Where are they? What attracts you to them? Are there eating establishes that repulse you? What draws you or repels you away from such places? If you were a visitor from England going to a restaurant in Czech Republic, what kinds of Czech foods would be offered to you as ‘typical’ dishes? Are there names of dishes that are unusual or seasonal that only Czechs would understand what they are? Have you ever visited a restaurant in another country where you found unusual names for food, beverages, or national dishes? Make a list of unusual international food dishes.

Exercise 5 ROLE PLAY • IDENTIFY some common facial expressions that may be used in a restaurant setting that communicate various reactions about the environment or the food to someone without speaking. With a partner, one person will role-play acting out the expression and the other person will guess what it is communicating to the waiter or waitress. • PREPARE and ROLE-PLAY a dialoguebetween a Czech waiterorwaitress and a difficultforeignguestwith many special food allergies, needs and requests. Theguestwantsthewaitstaff to explainwhatisSvíčková, Guláš, Vepřová se zelím a knedlíky, Španělský ptáček, Kanec se šípkovou omáčkou, Utopenec, Švestkové knedlíky and rakvičky se šlehačkou. Role play being a Czech tourist in thatnation‘s restaurant and trying to order a meal. • REFLECT: Considerhowdifferentcultures are knownfortheirfoodsortheirrelationship to foods. America isknownforits fast foods. India isknownforitsspicyfoods. Japan isknownforitsseafoods. Brazilisknownforitsbeef, etc. While these maybestereotypes, there are food preferencesthatcanbeidentified and food preferences. Whatstereotypesor food preferences are youawareofforothercountries?

Howmaythisbetrueforindividuals and nationsalike? • DISCOVER:Thereare severalinternationalmovementsusing food as theirtheme, such as Slow Food (http://www.slowfood.com). Slow Food wasstarted to counteracttheimpactof fast food. Theirwebsitesays, ˝to changetheworld, youhavethechangethe menu first. ˝ React to thisstatement.
