  2. Red Jacket • Seneca leader who did not want to sell Iroquois land to the Holland Land Company.

  3. The Old Pre-Emption Line was an imaginary line that originally separated New York and Massachusetts.

  4. Anthony Wayne • A famous Revolutionary War hero • Wayne County is named in his honor, even though he never lived here

  5. The first settlers came by water and settled in what is now Lyons.

  6. The first settlement in Wayne County was in Palmyra in 1789.

  7. There are 15 towns in Wayne County today.

  8. drumlin • A hill, running north to south, which was formed by deposits from a glacier

  9. potash • The remains of burnt wood ash, which was used to make soap and fertilizer. • This was one of Wayne County’s first industries.

  10. For many years, Lyons was famous for manufacturing peppermint oil.

  11. De Witt Clinton • New York Governor who supported the building of the Erie Canal.

  12. “Clinton’s Ditch” • Named after Governor Clinton • Another name for the Erie Canal

  15. Abolitionist • A person who believed that slavery should be ended completely

  16. The “Underground Railroad” was a group of people who helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom before the Civil War.
