  2. General Arthur Currie: 1875-1933 • From Ontario • Worked his way through the ranks • Argued that Canadian troops should fight together and that careful preparation was the key to winning battles

  3. General Arthur Currie: 1875-1933 • Planned the battle of Vimy Ridge, introduced the “creeping barrage” • Put in charge of Canadian Corps • Became Sir Arthur Currie in 1917 when he was knighted

  4. General Currie Quotations: • "To those who fall I say; you will not die but step into immortality. Your mothers will not lament your fate, but will be proud to have bourne such sons. Your names will be revered for ever and ever by your grateful country, and God will take you unto himself." • "Thorough preparation must lead to success. Neglect nothing."

  5. Sam Hughes: 1853-1921 • A controversial figure: Minister of Militia and Defence • He was accused of being associated with war profiteers • Worsened French English relations by forcing French speakers to train in English

  6. Sam Hughes • Also blamed for equipping Canadian soldiers with the ineffective Ross Rifle

  7. The Ross Rifle • The Ross Rifle proved to be an unsuitable weapon in trench warfare conditions because when fired rapidly it was prone to malfunction. The rifle also became easily jammed with mud and its bayonet fell off easily.

  8. Lee Enfield Rifle • Canadian soldiers often took the more reliable Lee Enfield rifles from fallen British soldiers.

  9. Billy Bishop: 1894-1956 • Became a fighter pilot in 1916 • Known for is crack shot • Shot down 72 enemy planes, more than any other allied fighter • Awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest honour for bravery

  10. Legacy • Some historians think that Billy Bishop embellished his successes—that he lied • He is now viewed as a hero—do you think it matters whether or not Billy Bishop lied about his success?
