WHAT IS IRONY? Irony is a contrast or discrepancy between one thing and another
TYPES OF IRONY Verbal Irony Situational Irony Dramatic Irony Ironic Irony
MEMORABLE IRONIC MOMENTS Romeo & Juliet = Dramatic Irony • We (the audience) know that Juliet has only taken a sleeping potion, but all of the characters think she is dead, essentially resulting in her lover Romeo’s suicide.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS CONT. All 3 shots Hinckley fired in an attempt to kill Ronald Regan missed the President. A bullet that ricocheted off of the President’s bulletproof limousine hit Regan in the chest. Irony = the vehicle made to protect the President incidentally killed him. John Hinckley = Situational Irony
WHY IS IRONY IMPORTANT? Writers can develop a deeper meaning in a text It can be an effective way of engaging and involving a reader in a text
