THE HISTORY OF HEALTHY SCHOOLS • 1980’s - The concept of the ‘Health Promoting School’ evolved from developmental work undertaken by the WHO • 1993 - European Network of Health Promoting Schools project: 3-year initiative Sixteen UK schools took part and 32 acted as controls. • 1992 White Paper ‘The Health of the Nation’: recognised the school as an important setting for health promotion. 1999 White Papers ‘Saving Lives, Our Healthier Nation’ and ‘Making a Difference’. • 1999 - Government launched National Healthy Schools Standard, following the evaluation of eight pilot sites. • April 2002 - all schools to have access to a nationally accredited Healthy Schools Programme
THE NATIONAL HEALTHY SCHOOLS STANDARD • The NHSS has been designed to support and complement the new PSHE framework • It is intended to be holistic, by being included in every aspect of the curriculum and involving all members of the school community • It aims to extend the good practice already going on in schools and ensure that all schools are involved • It is meant to give schools as much practical support as possible in creating an enjoyable, safe, productive learning environment and minimise potential health risks.

WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL GAIN FROM TAKING PART IN THE PROGRAMME? Becoming a Healthy School is a continually evolving process. With the Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme there are steps to reward your journey: • All schools receive a Certificate of Commitment on joining the programme, completing a baseline audit and setting up a task group • Further certificates are awarded on completion of topics and themes in the quality standards • Once the School has completed 3 topics and 2 themes they can apply for Healthy School Status and will then be able to use the Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme logo.
