The truth is, he was clean shaven all of his life until just shortly before the election that made him the 16th President. • President Grover Cleveland was married in office. Not unusual. But he was 49 and his bride, Frances Folsom, who was only 21. • The first person to become president who was born in a hospital was Jimmy Carter.

Tariff of 1816 • British goods were being sold far more than American products • Placing a tariff on imports eliminated foreign price advantage • Use money for internal improvements • People from the West and South despised Tariff b/c increased cost of products
The Second Bank of the United States (BUS) • Made available a currency guaranteed to be accepted nation wide • Allowed for people in different regions to do business • Show the world the U.S. is open for business • 2nd bank will be chartered for the next 20 years
Internal Improvements (pg 217) In order for people in different regions to do business and allow for the U.S. economy to grow, a system of communication and travel needed to be built

Election of 1824 • First election that looked at the popular vote (white male suffrage) • Corrupt Bargain • House of Reps had to decide winner • Adams made a deal with Clay to get votes in the House of Reps • In turn, Clay became Adam’s sec of state • Jacksonians in House and Senate block agenda of Adams
Election of 1828 • Dirty campaign • Jackson wins • Spoils System (clears out 10% of the federal government and fills them with his people) • Uses the “veto” more than any president up until that point

Nullification Conflict Causes Results • The Tariff of Abominations (1828/1832) is passed which leads John C. Calhoun to develop the theory of nullification • Differences in the economies of the North and South lead to different opinions on tariffs (bad for South) • South Carolina declares tariff of 1832 null and void • Jackson is furious and declares South Carolina’s action as treasonous and threatens to hang Calhoun and occupy area with soldiers • Henry Clay comes up with a compromise to help settle differences
Bank of the U.S. Conflict Causes Results • A renewal of the U.S. bank is introduced • Many people (including Jackson) believed that the bank only served the interest of the wealthy • Jackson transferred all money in the B.U.S. into state banks (pet banks) • Jackson vetoes charter • B.U.S. becomes just another bank and bankrupts 5 years later
