Strategies for Linking Colleges and Institutes Why, who and how
A Global Snapshot of Research Networks • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\Canadian Policy Research Network-- CPRN.htm • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\ESCORENA - The European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture.htm • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\IMAC Related Links.htm • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\Networks of Centres of Excellence.htm • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\The Networks - Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations (CIPI).htm • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ACCC\ulern_on.htm
Summary Observations • Research Networks are a global phenomena • Usually discipline specific (or at least have a specific objective) • Member and/or government funded • Bottom-up driven • Supported with background structures • Data sharing agreements • IP agreements • Co-authorship agreements
Steps to Expanding the Innovation Network The common goal The players (Stakeholders) The Means (Tools) The Outcome (Deliverables)
Creating Linkages Step 1 – The common purpose(s) • List your 3 most important reasons in engage in innovation activities • 1. Improve the quality of education • 2. Attract, retain and develop students, faculty, staff • 3. Address community innovation needs for socio-economic development • 4. Access to partners and market-based resources • 5. Source of revenue • 6. Long term security of multiple revenue sources • 7. Alignment with government funding programs and priorities
Creating Linkages Step 2 – The team members • List the 5 main stakeholders in the proposed Innovation network • 1. Ourselves • 2. Government (IRAP,FedNor,NRC,ACOA,WD,CED,PART,PAR, EFCR, NSERC,CFI,CIHR,SSHRC,Provincial innovation departments) • 3. Sector groups (Sector specific associations, Sector councils) • 4. Emerging sectors (municipalities) • 5. Research networks, centers of excellence, universities • 6. Interest groups, NGO’s • 7. Elected officials
Creating Linkages Step 3 – Defining the Deliverables • List the 3 most important services the Innovation network should provide • 1. Quick access to national college system’s innovation resources (researchers, adjudicators, mentors) • 2. Greater critical mass when making applications • 3. Current information portal • 4. Efficient “messaging to our stakeholders” • 5. Access to mentoring, individual connectivity (CAiv Net) • 6. Quick link to university tech transfer offices (West Link, BLUE etc.) 7. Quick link to university professors inherently doing applied research
Creating Linkages Step 4 – Selecting the Means • List how the services should be delivered: • Web page + portal • Committee of top level research advisors ACCC • Standing Committee on Applied Research • News messaging service.
