What are Valence Electrons and What are Their Uses? Lesson Essential Question:
Valence Electrons They are electrons in the outermost shell. They are used in bonding.
Nitrogen Group or Group 15 has 5 valence e-s. (s2p3) ChalcogenGroup or Group 16 has 6 valence e-s. (s2p4) Noble Gases or Group 18 has 8 valence e-s. (s2p6) Exception: Helium which has two valence e-s since it is a s2. Carbon Group or Group 14 has 4 valence e-s. (s2p2) Alkali Metals have one valence e-. (s1) Alkaline Earth Metals have two valence e-s. (s2) Boron Group or Group 13 has 3 valence e-s. (s2p1) Halogen Group or Group 17 has 7 valence e-s. (s2p5) Transition Metals or “d block” elements have 1 or 2 valence e-s. Lanthanide and Actinide Series Elements or “f block” elements have 1 or 2 valence e-s.
Dot Designations Valence Electrons can be represented by Lewis Dot Structures. 2 valence e- 1 valence e- 3 valence e- 4 valence e- X X X X 5 valence e- 6 valence e- 7 valence e- 8 valence e- X X X X
