What you Need!!! • 3 backings • One mum or garter flower • One pipe cleaner • Ribbon for points • Ribbon for braid • Trinkets • Basic ribbon
Points • You will take 12 pieces of #9 ribbon cut into 6”strips • Fold the two ends toward one another to form a point • You can also make loops by folding the ribbon in half • Staple at the bottom to secure the ribbon together • You can either use all points, all loops or alternate the two • You will staple the points to the font of one of the backings in a clocklike pattern
Adding Ribbons • To add ribbons you want to start with the largest ribbons in the back and work your way through the smaller ribbons • Add the ribbons in a fan like pattern using staples • We will use several different size ribbons #40, #9, #5, #3 and curling ribbon ( quantities will be listed on the board)– If you are creating a mum you will cut the ribbon into 1 yd strands, garters you will cut ribbon about 8-12 inches
Chains • You will have to make the Love Chain or Military Braid – it will count as a daily grade as well as should be attached to your mum • If you master the military braid, you can also make a cube chain • If you want to add letters to a chain a good chain to use for this is the loop chain – you can also just attach letters to a plain ribbon • A notes sheet on the chains and a demonstration will be given while making the chains
Securing the flower • When you get your flower, open it up to the center, you will slide a pipe cleaner through the center and tie a knot in the top of the pipe cleaner • Glue the knotted pipe cleaner to the center of the mum by place some hot glue under and over the top of the mum • This will ensure your mum does not come apart
Putting it all together • Staple the backing with your points to the backing with your ribbon – be sure the two circle are lined up correctly • If you are making a Garter you will need to attach your Garter arm piece by placing it over the center of the backing you attached the ribbon to and secure it with staples • Add a generous amount of glue to the backing with the points and feed your pipe cleaner to the center hole to secure the mum flower to the rest of your mum • Attach your extra backing to the back of the backing with the ribbons attached using hot glue only!
Trinkets • You must attach a minimum of 9 trinkets to your mum. 3 trinkets should be bells. • I will give you a class year, homecoming, football, helmet, megaphone, 3 bells and a trinket of your choice. • Trinkets can be attached to ribbons as well as the mum flower by either gluing or tying • You do not necessarily have to use the trinkets I have given you but you still should have a minimum of 9 – If your date is from another Katy ISD school I have some trinkets in other colors
TO complete • Make sure everything is attached securely • There should be no evidence of staples anywhere on your backing • Cut the bottom of your ribbons to add the look of depth – Slants or inverted points at different lengths • Bring the mum or garter to me so a shake test can be performed!
