PRODUCT DESIGN And Concurrent Engineering Environment MECH 528 - 001 • PROPOSAL TO SENIOR MANAGEMENT • Dec 2nd, 2003 PDT #7 Andreea Luliana Vladan Sally Warner Nola Vannasing Ricardo Plancarte (Team Leader) Jahir Amezcua
Concurrent Engineering Roles • Team Leader (Project Manager) Ricardo • Marketing Manager Nola • Product Manager Sally • Project Engineer Andreea • Manufacturing Engineer Jahir • Supply Management Representative Jahir • Design Engineer Sally
Presentation Overview • Brief Product Description • Final product (Proof of concept) • Manufacturing Process (problems encountered, product design, material, schedule, etc..) • Market and distribution channels • Financial Analysis • Lessons learned (working within a cross-functional team)
Mission Statement • Product Description • A convenient device that will allow purse carriers to hang them right at the edge of the table where they are seated.
Critical Customer Needs • The PPH can adjust to different tables • The PPH can hold a lot of weight • The PPH is small and compact • The PPH is lightweight
Target Specifications • Table thickness: measured tables, manufacturing standard table thickness • Purse mass: weighed purses • Device size and weight: compared to the size of other standard items that people carry in their purses such as cell phones
Software testing and prototyping • Piece was modeled in superdraw as a 2-D beam with a support at the mid-section • BC’s: - clamped at one end (part of device pressing on the bottom of the table) -Free at the second end with applied load • An automatic finite element mesh was chosen in Algor and analyzed • Results: for acceptable stresses the device could sustain about 10.5 kg (target was 5kg)
Manufacturing Process • Plastic Injection Molding 1988 80 Ton Engel Injection Mold Machine
Manufacturing Process • Plastic Injection Molding • Raw Material: Plastic Pellets. • Pellets heated and melted in a barrel. • Molten plastic injected into the mold. • Solidification and extraction from mold. • Bonding of plastic and rubber (super glue, epoxy) • Inspection of the final product. • Packaging and Shipping
Manufacturing Process • Mold Design Considerations • Key Process Variables • Mold Temperature (43- 65C) • Material Temperature (204-260C) • Injection Filling Time (110 seg) • Injection Flow Rate (55 g/min)
Manufacturing Process • Mold Design Considerations • Key Process Variables • Draft Angle: Facilitates the part extraction of the mold. (1) • Radii: Prevents stress concentration. (1.5 mm) • Location of the ingate. • Minimize number of bends that causes turbulence in flow.
Manufacturing Process • Estimating Costs for Molding Process • Total Cost = Material + Setup + Molding + Labor • Material Cost: Volume (cm3) * Density (g/cm3) * ABS Price ($/g) • Setup Cost: Setup time (hr) * Cost per hr ($/hr) / Total Parts (PPH) • Molding Cost: Machine rate ($/hr) * Cycle time (hr/cycle) / Parts per cycle (PPH/cycle) • Labor Cost: Operator rate ($/hr) * Cycle time (hr/cycle) / Parts per cycle (PPH/cycle)
Manufacturing Process • Estimating Costs for Molding Process • Initial Production: 1000 PPH • PPH Volume = 70 cm3 • Total Unit Cost = $1.15 per PPH • Production Time = 18 hours
Market • Primary Market • People carrying purses • Downtown Core • Students and Professionals • Outgoing and Active lifestyle • Ages: 18-55 • Secondary Market • Coffee Shops • Restaurants • Public Places • Brand Name Bag
Market • Time to Market • Promotional incentives to bag retailers • On Shelf before Christmas • Advertising • Posters in Stores • Pamphlets next to cash registers • Ad in Metro Newspaper
Distribution Channels Market
Market • Pricing
Financial Analysis Initial investment cost: $1,500.00MarketingRamp-Up Cost *Profitability reached in 2nd Quarter of Operations)
Lessons Learned • Time restrictions can be very dangerous • Concurrent Engineering is one of the best options to develop great ideas • Communication plays a major role in effectively running cross-functional teams • Team member Availability can be a big issue when scheduling meetings • The cost of having 5 people at a meeting is 5 times more expensive than the cost of 1, but the rewards can outweigh the costs if effectively conducted
