Cancer Ian, Abram Ms. Storkey HFA 4UI 29/04/2014
Description • Cancer is a group of diseases caused by unregulated cell growth • Cell loses the ability to control mitosis (cell division) • It cannot control the pace where it multiplies affecting other tissues and systems • It can lose control to stay at original site and can spread throughout the body (Lerner, 2008)
Symptoms • Sore or wound that does not heal • Cough and sore throat that does not go away • A lump or thickening in different parts of the body usually in the breast • Change in size, colour or shape of a wart or a mole • Unusual bleeding or discharge • Difficulty in swallowing or digestion • Changes in bowel habits (Lerner, 2008)
Statistics • The American Cancer Society reports that half of all men and one-third of all women will develop cancer in their lifetimes (Prevent Cancer Foundation, 2014) • As people get older, incident rates of cancer typically increase (Cancer Research UK, 2014) (Alice, 2012)
Leading Causes of Cancer • Tobacco • Alcohol • Unhealthy diet • Infections • Family history- genetic factors • Environmental Risks • Radiation (Lerner,2008)
Smoking • Leading cause of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), bladder, esophageal, kidney, lung, oral cavity, pancreatic, and stomach cancers • Scientists believe 30% of all cancer deaths in the U.S are caused by smoking (National Cancer Institute, 2014) (Hadfield, 2014)
Alcohol • Overconsumption of alcohol increases risk of oral, esophageal, breast, and colorectal cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2014) (Sreejithk2000, 2014)
Genetics • Oncogenes • Tumour suppressor genes • DNA repair genes ( Stanford Medicine, 2014) (wpclipart, 2014)
Infections • Some viruses and bacteria can cause cancer and is a prevalent issue in 3rd world countries due to lack of health care • Examples: human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B and C, epstein-barr virus, and helicobacter pylori (National Cancer Institute, 2014) (SoftIcon, 2012)
Environmental Risks • Secondhand tobacco smoke, outdoor air pollution, and asbestos have been linked to lung cancer • Drinking water that containing large amounts of arsenic has been linked to skin, bladder, and lung cancers (National Cancer Institute, 2014) (Affordable World Security, 2011)
Radiation • Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is the main cause of nonmelanoma skin cancers • Ionizing radiation from medical assessments (x-rays, CT scans) increases risk of cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2014) (icons ETC, 2014)
How to Prevent Cancer • The top ⅔ of cancer deaths are caused by smoking, lack of physical activity, and a poor diet • Although some cancers are hereditary and can’t be avoided there are many ways of reducing your risk (Prevent Cancer Foundation, 2014)
Reduce Your Risk • Eat Healthy • Exercise • Don’t smoke • Go for regular check-ups to catch anything before it’s too late (Prevent Cancer Foundation, 2014) (GROWashington-Aroostook, 2012)
Foods Contributing to Cancer • Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs)- increase rate of tumour growth • Processed meats- contains preservatives that causes cancer • Microwave popcorn- bags of the popcorn are made up of chemical that cause various types of cancer such as liver and pancreatic cancer • Soda pop- the sugar, colouring, and chemical it contains feed cancer cells • ‘Diet’ foods, beverages- aspartame a component of this product increases risk of birth defects and cancer (Benson, 2013)
Continued... • Refined ‘white’ flours- increases blood sugar levels and growth of cancer cells • Refined sugars- rapid increase of insulin and cancer cells • Conventional fruits such as apples and grapes- pesticide can cause cancer • Farmed salmon- contaminated by carcinogenic chemicals, pesticides and other elements that contribute in increasing the probability of getting cancer • Hydrogenated oils- alter structure and flexibility of cell membranes (Benson, 2013)
Foods That Help Prevent Cancer • Dark, green leafy vegetable (broccoli)- contains natural chemical compound called flavones that have characteristics that fight cancer • Citrus food (oranges)- Vitamin C (ability to act directly on cancer cells) • Berries- high in antioxidants that fights cancer • Green Tea- increase anti-cancer properties for cancer prevention (Beliveau and Gingras, 2006)
