  1. Unit 3:Changing PopulationsIs Canada a Great Place to Live? Canadian War Museum Gr. 9 Geography (Applied) CGC1P

  2. What do others say? • Stand-up/Sit down • Consider the following statements and comments taken from foreign media sources about Canada: • “Canada has a global reputation for being one of the best places in the world to live.” • “It is a nation that is known for its immense size and its natural beauty...Canadians actually care about their environment.” • “Canada is well-known as a safe, just, and peaceful society.” • “A world leader in international peacekeeping and human rights.” • Canada should be proud of a quality of life that is one of a kind in the world.

  3. What Makes Canada a Great Place to Live? • We sometimes take what we have for granted... • What do we have that makes our country a great place to live (10mins)? • Get out a new piece of paper (with the heading “What Makes Canada a Great Place to Live?”) • Create a T-Chart in your notes as follows: • Brainstorm as many as you can. • Then answer this question: • Do the positives outweigh the negatives?

  4. Measuring Quality of Life • Review the T-Chart you just made… • How did you determine what was negative and positive? • Would all Canadians share the same responses as you?

  5. Measuring Quality of Life • What criteria do we use to determine whether somewhere is a desirable place to live? (Graffiti Wall) • Can focus on affluence (income and wealth) • Strength of country’s economy measured by Gross Domestic Product, employment statistics, average family income • Can focus on quality of life • Indicators include quantity of goods and services consumed, overall health, education, environment, safety, equality

  6. Measuring Quality of Life • Countries are often grouped according to their similarities to help make measuring easier • Geographers place countries into one of three groups: developed, newly industrialized, and developing. • Now, add the following definitions to your key terms page: • Developed countries: aka “industrialized nations”; have strongest economies & highest standards of living • Newly industrialized countries: going through process of becoming developed (fast growing economies, but lagging behind in terms of quality of life) • Developing countries: lowest levels of economic and social growth

  7. UN Human Development Index • United Nations ranks countries according to quality of life • Uses a scale called the Human Development Index (HDI) • Add this definition to your key terms list: • Human Development Index: a scale used by the United Nations to measure countries’ quality of life based on health & life expectancy, education & knowledge, and a high standard of living • Where do you think Canada would rank on the HDI?

  8. UN Human Development Index Canada presently ranks 11th in the world according to the HDI. Check out this Globe and Mail videofor more input!

  12. Your Turn • Please complete the following questions in your notebook (for homework – finish tonight): • Most Canadians are proud of their country. Make a list of five words that describe the Canada you are proud to be a part of. • Give three pieces of evidence that Canadians enjoy a high standard of living. • Given what you learned in this lesson, has your point of view changed about whether Canada is a great place to live? • If you could do one thing that would make Canada an even better place to live, what would it be? Give an example to support your position.
