It will usually tell you the subject and kind of information contained. • Look at the labels on the X and Y axes. • Look for the “legend”—this tells you what the various colors, patterns, or symbols represent. • Is the information timely? • Is the source authoritative?
Step 2: What does it say? • What information can you get from the table? • What trend or history is shown by the graph?
Step 3: What does it mean? • Make a judgment about how the information contained in the table or graph relates to your questions. (What are you supposed to know because of this graph?)
