  7. Universal Precautions Treat all blood and body fluids as potentially infectious for HIV, HBV, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other pathogens Each vehicle should be equipped with a biohazard kit

  8. Hepatitis A (HAV) Hepatitis A is a virus spread by infected feces that contaminate food or drinking water and infects approximately 35,000 people in the United States each year.

  9. Hepatitis B (HBV) Hepatitis B is a virus that causes serious liver disease, and is sometimes fatal. • HBV is transmitted by contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person. HBV can be found in: • Saliva • Semen • Urine • And feces of infected persons At this time there is no cure for HBV. However, there is a vaccine that can prevent infection.

  10. Hepatitis C (HCV) Like HBV, HCV is a viral infection of the liver. It causes inflammation of the liver and is the leading reason for liver transplants in the United States. • Hepatitis C is spread by: • Unprotected sexual contact • Injection drug use • Exposure to infected blood It is NOT spread to another person through casual contact. It is a blood – to – blood transmission
