Light • God created the Universe through His light • Enables us to see and live in God’s creation • Light is God’s love for us • Goodness, morality, high ethical standards • Is God
Darkness • Opposite of light, dichotomy of creation • Evil inclination always tries to pull us away from the light • Is Satan
The Battle Between Light and Darkness • Darkness wants to extinguish light • Light fights the darkness for our perfection • Darkness infiltrated God’s people through the surrounding pagan nations • Darkness was winning the battle • The Light sent prophets to warn the people • Ezekiel 10 tells us that in 586 BCE the darkness won
Ezekiel 10 • Ezekiel was in the throne room of God • At the river Chebar Ezekiel had a vision of Heaven (chapter 1) • This time something different happened • Ezekiel witnessed the Shekinah (the Glory of God) leaving the Temple in Jerusalem • The Temple was no longer sanctified to God • The Light left the Temple
Darkness came upon the people • Babylonians invaded • They destroyed the Temple • They exiled the people • Darkness fell upon the people
Exile • 70 years in Babylon • Persia defeats Babylon • Cyrus, King of Persia, allows the Hebrew people to return to Jerusalem • Cyrus helps the Hebrew to rebuild the city and the Temple • The Shekinah DID NOT return; the Ark of the Covenant was missing • The Exile was over, but the nation of Judah was under the control of pagans. Darkness had prevailed • Alexander of Greece destroys the Persian empire. • Judah under Greek pagan control
The Messiah • God said he would send His Messiah • The Messiah would restore the Light • The Messiah would re-establish the nation • The Messiah would be descendant of King David
The Light was Temporary • Video 1 Maccabees 3:1-5 • Judas Maccabee restores the independent nation of Judah (168 BCE) • He is declared Messiah
Darkness returns • Judas was not the Messiah • The Romans came and conquered Judah (68 BCE) • The people waited for the Messiah
For Us Today • The Light is available to us • You must invite Jesus into your heart • Let Jesus guide you • Beware that darkness is still out there.
