  3. Family in Jesus’ Day • Bloodline connections • Sons lived with parents, added to their home when they married • Village in Judea was usually one extended family • Parents had many children • Marriage was prearranged and usually within clans

  4. Jesus’ Radical Statement Acceptable to say to a crowd: “Here are my brothers, uncles, and cousins.” Unacceptable to say to a crowd: “Here are my brothers, sisters, and mother.” Jesus defined the family units of the Kingdom of Heaven (anyone who followed Him was a member, period)

  5. For Us Today • The spiritual family is a foundational stone of the Kingdom of Heaven • Unfortunately, this concept has never been an accepted concept of the universal church • The definition has been accepted here • Anyone wanting to be a disciple of Christ must be immediately accepted
