The Sermon on the Mount (cont.) • The Beatitudes • Series of statements • Used to open the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew • 1st half of each statement shows the attitude/characteristics of a true disciple • 2nd half of each statement shows the rewards of discipleship • Beatitudes comes from Greek “Markarios” • A reference to the presumed lifestyle of the gods • Can be translated “happy,” “congratulations,” or “lucky”
The Sermon on the Mount (cont.) • Analysis of the Beatitudes • Blessed are the poor in spirit • Emphasis is on humility • Must recognize one’s dependence on God • Blessed are those who mourn • Important to realize one’s sinful condition • One’s this condition is recognized, grief will follow • Blessed are the meek • From the practice of domesticating animals • One must be willing to submit to God’s leadership
Analysis of the Beatitudes (cont.) • Blessed are those who hunger/thirst for righteousness • Must show a desire for spiritual growth • Spiritual maturity results in a fulfilled life • Blessed are the merciful • Must show a concern for others • Rabbis taught adversity was a sign of sin • We are to show the compassion we desire
Analysis of the Beatitudes (cont.) • Blessed are the Pure in Heart • Represents sincere/dedicated devotion • Judaism required ritualistic cleansing • What about the heart? • Sincere and pure motives assures acceptance from God • Blessed are the Peacemakers? • Difference in loving peace and making peace • Reconciliation requires involvement
Analysis of the Beatitudes (cont.) • Blessed are Those Who Have Been Persecuted for Righteousness • Persecution is assumed • Presence of the Kingdom will result in stiff resistance • Citizens need to understand and be ready for this reality
