The Ten Virgins Matthew 25:1-13
Introduction • This parable is based on the marriage ceremony • When the groom was ready for the wedding ceremony he would send word • The bride would gather TEN friends, who were virgins to stand watch • They created a pathway, with their lamps, from the city gates to the bride’s home
Cultural twists • The five virgins without oil • Trying to buy oil in the middle of the night
Imagery of the Parable • Church view today – Jesus is the groom • Imagery in Jesus’ day #1 – Kingdom of Heaven is the groom • Imagery in Jesus’ day #2 – the LORD is the groom • Entering the feast – entering the Kingdom of Heaven
Door to Heaven • Can only be opened from the inside • The five virgins pleaded and pounded on the door • Only Jesus can open the door
The MAIN metaphor and for us TODAY • The oil is a metaphor for righteousness • The five had full lamps – full of righteousness • The five with no oil – no righteousness • “They feel asleep” means that if time stopped right now – are you righteous?
