This report covers updates from the ESPR & SPR boards on education initiatives, outreach programs, and future projects. The focus is on enhancing online educational resources, tele-reading for TB cases, and expanding VSI-US research. Strategic suggestions include website overhaul, policy development, and improving governance for better institutional performance.

Education: website • Site migration, then re-think education pages • A lot of written material out there, people have other ways to get to it • More useful: a condensation of the literature in bite sized chunks in one place relevant to the various groups who access our site. • Shift the focus to building up repositories of online educational talks & training modules • Need a policy/strategic plan: website, education & outreach committees • Cover content, format, access (paywalls/free), intellectual property & legal responsibility
Education: other • Live web streaming SPR: major breakthrough opportunity for WFPI. Take up elsewhere? • Mini-symposium, journal • New ACR-WFPI training course in Haiti planned for March 2014 • South African tour, summer 2013
Outreach: tele-reading/TB (1)(Almost all referrals: pediatric TB) Médecins sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders • June ’12 to date: approx. 120 reports (sometimes > 1 communication and film per case) • Onsite clinician training on pediatric TB image interpretation in South Africa • Joint MSF-WFPI Q&A assessment • Tele-reading submissions 2012 (806) • Conclusions: technician training &digital machinery raises quality • Article submitted for publication
Outreach: tele-reading/TB (2) Khayelitsha, South Africa • July ‘12 – Spring ’13: Referrals = 551; Reports + 400, 49 volunteers • Just re-started, taken over by Stanford University • Only cases needing 2nd opinion now being referred (= manageable flow, no substitution) • Firewall = no platform yet, dedicated email • Audit for publication in mini symposium • Audit 1: Referral card information, radiograph information • Audit 2: Volunteer officer database phases 1 & 2 • Additional possible work for future on this database
Outreach: tele-reading/TB (3) Other tele-reading site possibilities 2014 • IGICH, Bangalore, India (mainly CT): ? • Liberia: non-starter (digital machine broken down) • Malawi (Baylor clinics) • Swaziland (National TB program) Other TB activity • Savvas’ 7 minute snippets • Need tele-reading & field training (onsite & online)to gain momentum before expanding network Platform: use paying platform for CT, free platform for jpegs?
Outreach: Volume Sweep Imaging (VSI) - Ultrasound (1) Team WFPI (SA, DB, IB), Brian Garra (Co-Founder, Imaging the World), Kara-Lee Pool (UCLA), leading institutions & radiologists in South Africa Focus • VSI-US of the mediastinum for TB nodes • VSI-US of the head for hydrocephalus • VSI-US of the kidneys for hydronephrosis Particular interest in the detection of enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes in children presenting with Tuberculosis
Outreach: VSI-US (2) Research – comparing VSI-US performed by ultrasound naïve volunteers and comparing diagnostic capability to gold standard imaging. Publication: the group hopes to produce a number of papers as a result of research. The results can be translated into practice in developing countries anywhere in the world.

Treasury 2013-14 Income • Need to start fund raising now to secure funding in 18 months time (grant application is a slow process) Expenditures: • On track re projected expenditures presented during Annual Meeting May 2014 (see website) • BUT management services costs as yet unknown
