  3. SBIR Stormwater Solicitation • 80% of Californians live within a 30 minute drive of the coast • Beach usage is higher in CA than in other 49 states combined (U.S Lifeguard Assn.)

SBIR Stormwater Solicitation • Huge universe of sites with varied conditions • Construction, Industrial, Municipal • Tens of thousands of Industrial Sites in Region 9 • BMP effectiveness studies find wide variability depending on site characteristics and operator knowledge • Owner/operator knowledge biggest impediment to efficient BMPs

  6. SBIR Stormwater Solicitation • Iterative approach to BMP implementation not widely used • How to get quick reliable feedback and use it? • Reliable water quality data not in the equation • Sample collection and lab analysis is seen as too complex for most permittees

SBIR Stormwater Solicitation • Program Needs • Real-time monitoring technology • for pathogens, oil and grease, metals, and petroleum hydrocarbons • Require little supervision, maintenance, and technical know-how • Provide data that would allow iterative approach • Technology and output should be user-friendly for those without a background in water quality

  8. SBIR Stormwater Solicitation • Program Needs • Technologies to promote rapid settling of fine suspended particles in stormwater retention basins without adverse water quality effects • To be used in construction, municipal, and industrial settings
