Celebration!Math preliminary ISTEP data shows we are moving in the right direction!
What are the parts of the Math Block? Number Work Inspecting Equations Problem Solving (Math Workshop) Fluency and Maintenance
Number Work Number sense without a story context Activities have multiple entry points or more than one answer Accommodates students with a range of abilities and skills Promotes communication and reasoning
K-1 After or Before 6 9 2 17 39
Inspecting Equations Discuss whether a number sentence is true or false Use number relationships to reason about equality relationship Understand the equal sign Recognize patterns and make conjectures about number properties Prepares students for algebra
True or False? 7 = 7 7 = 2 + 5 8 + 2 = 2 + 7 12 = 9 + 4 8 x 6 = (8 x 3) + (8 x 3)
Open Number Sentences 4 + 2 = +2 5 + = 6 a = 3 + 5 6 = 5 + a
Problem Solving Focuses on developing strategies to solve a variety of problems (multiple ways to solve the problem) Story problem with context Provides time for students to talk about their solutions and strategies Digging in instead of doing a bunch of repetitive problems to practice the skill
Fluency and Maintenance Individualized for students based on their computation level Strengthens concepts and skills Builds efficiency and accuracy Reinforces vocabulary
Our Philosophy on Math Facts • Students work on a few facts at a time • Students work at a just right level for them • Students need to understand the why instead of just simply memorizing • Students need to practice mastered facts so that they don’t forget them • Even if you have an upper grades student don’t forget about addition/subtraction facts
Ideas for Practicing Facts at Home Use apps – see the handout Use math fact cards to play war If you don’t have math fact flashcards use an uno deck or a regular deck with face cards removed Play uno but in order to play on your turn you have to add/subtract/multiply/divide the two number cards together
Trust the Process • There are many ways you can support your mathematician at home • Counting money • Playing games • Math Facts • Cook together and talk about fractions • Trust your teacher to teach the strategies and to help your child with conceptual understandings
