Hypnosis “State Debate” • Believers think: It is a state of consciousness resulting from narrowed focus of attention • Characterized by heightened suggestibility (can get them to do something) • Subject does not fall asleep • Skeptics think: It is just a trick that works best on those who are highly suggestible • People are just convinced (consciously and unconsciously) that this really works and therefore act on their assumptions • Brainwave patterns remain the same as if you were “conscious”

  3. Meditation • A state of heightened focus and relaxation • Essentially works in reverse of our typical understanding of consciousness- we tune out some (or most) external stimuli
