What authority do employees have to deal with traffic situations? • Principal and staff have authority to direct flow of traffic and pedestrians on campus • Right to enter and remain on school grounds subject to safe conduct and obedience to school rules and staff direction Risk Management Department
What authority do employees have to deal with traffic situations? • Procedural Directive Visitors to Schools states, in part: • “Visitors must comply with the rules of the school. • An individual failing to comply with any of these procedures and/or causing a disruption of the educational process may be barred or removed from the campus at the principal's discretion.” Risk Management Department
Am I “covered” by insurance? • You are covered by Liability Insurance and Workers’ Comp • Doing any duties that are part of your job • Doing any duties that you have been instructed to do by your supervisor • Document and report any accidents or incidents Risk Management Department
What do I need to do? • Make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians • Hold the palm of you hand out in front when stopping people and vehicles • Be visible and heard! Wear a traffic vest and use a whistle Risk Management Department
What do I need to do? • Explain traffic rules to those not following the flow • Have a handout with the school’s traffic flow and rules with you • Report safety hazards immediately Risk Management Department
What do I need to do? • Always be courteous • Do not allow students to direct traffic • Discuss traffic safety in newsletters • Make recommendations for improvements to your principal Risk Management Department
What about difficult or disorderly drivers? • Identify “repeat offenders” by child, vehicle, parent or description • Report them to the principal • Meeting / Phone Call - Identify unique needs and provide information • Trespass Warning • Immediate safety hazards – call the police! • Drunk or Reckless Drivers • Weapons • Life-threatening situations Risk Management Department
What if there is an accident? • Check to see if anyone is injured • Render first aid if appropriate • Summon Police, Fire & EMS if necessary • Keep bystanders away • Direct traffic in a safe manner around the accident scene • Give statement only to Police or Risk Management Risk Management Department
