Tenets of Interpretive Theory • New Understanding of People – Offers new insight into human condition (rhetorical critics, ethnographers, humanistic research). • Self-Referential Imperative: Must include yourself as a constitutes of your own construction. • Clarification of values – Brings people’s values into the open. Theorists must acknowledge, identify or unmask the ideology behind the message of study. • Ethical Imperative: Grant others a say in what you say about them.

Tenets of Interpretive Theory • Aesthetic Appeal – Allows for creativity when writing theory. • Ex – Using metaphors for clarity. • Community of Agreement – support by scholarly field. • Reform of Society – Generates change. • Critical Theorists: Scholars who use theory to reveal unjust practices or imbalance of power.

Traditions in the Communication Field • Critical Tradition • They seek to understand 1)the taken-for-granted systems, 2)power structures and 3)beliefs- or ideologies– that dominate society. • They are interested in uncovering oppressive social conditions and power arrangements in order to promote emancipation. • See the “culture industries” (entertainment businesses) as a site of reproducing dominant ideology and distracting people from recognizing unjust distribution of power. • Hegemony (reinforces the status quo and current power structure through subtle manipulation).
