  2. Tribes • Some of the Eastern Woodland tribes were… • the Narragansett • Seneca • Onondaga • Oneida • Mohawk • Penobscot.

  3. Seneca • Lived in Genesee river to Canandaigua lake( western NY) • There were also Ohio Seneca tribes • They were part of the Iroquois tribe

  4. Seneca • They were heavily tattooed • They were highly developed in warfare (had guns) • They spoke the language of ogwenhowel • It means great hill people

  5. Mohawk •Known as kanien’ehake (people of the flint) •They lived in long houses in NY, Quebec, and Ontario •They practiced agriculture, grew corn, squash, and beans •They were trappers

  6. Mohawk • They exchanged furs for guns w/ the dutch • They had Mohawks • The women were top less with skirts made of deer skin or a full deer skin dress. • Several ear piercings, shell necklaces

  7. Mohawk • Men wore breech clothing of deerskin in the summer ,deerskin leggings, a full piece deerskin shirt in the winter, earrings necklaces, long hair or mohawks • The children wore nothing in the summer
