WHAT IS A CYBORG? • Usually when people think cyborg they think of The Million Dollar Man or Robocop. Essentially people think a cyborg is a being which is half human and half robot. • While this is not untrue it is not the full definition of a cyborg. • In CYBORG RIGHTS by R.Clarke the definition of a cyborg is broken down into 2 sections: • A) Prosthete: a human that has a prosthesis. • B) Orthot: a human that uses an orthosis.
PROSTHETE • A prosthete is essentially a prosthetic that helps a human gain functionality that they previously did not have, or helps to bring a defective functionality up to par. • A prosthete can also be broken down into 3 sections: • Endo-Prothesis: Internal and integrated with the body; e.g. a pace maker. • Exo-Prothesis: outside of the body but integrated with it; e.g. artificial limbs • External Prothesis: this is separate from the body, but is still integrated with it; e.g. a cane.
ORTHOT • An orthot is an item which is separate from the body, but which enhances a function. • An orthot can be broken into two categories: • External Orthosis: this is external to the body but is integrated with it; e.g. a microscope. • Exo-Orthosis: this is on the outer extremity of the body, but integrated with it; e.g. an artificial limb that enhances the naturals limb performance (extra fingers).

Pre-Cyborg rights • Pre-Cyborg rights are the rights one has before they are a cyborg. • Some of these rights include: • The right to recive quality of life prosthtetics; e.g. hearing aids. • The right to recive a matter of life and death prosthetics; e.g. pace makers • The right to decline a prothesis or orthosis; e.g. a tracking chip. • The right to claim on organizers of sporting events to enable the participation of cyborg athletes; e.g. wheel chair basket ball.
Rights of the Prosthete • Some of the rights of some one who is a cyborg with a prosthete(s) are: • The right to disconnect from a prosthete; e.g. take their artifical limb off or disconect from a life support system. • The right to use any or all of the 3 different types of prosthete (exo, endo, and external) in facilities used by the public; e.g. a wheelchair on a boat. • The right to claim on the organizers of sporting events to participate seperatly from able bodied athletes(and vise versa)
Rights of The Orthot • Some rights of a cyborg who has an orthot(s): • The right to claim upon organizers of sporting events to participate with able-bodied athletes. • The right to claim against others to use their enhanced capabilities, perhaps within only a certain context, or perhaps generally, and in some cases free from retributive justice; e.g. security personelle • The right to observe, transmit, and record the behaviour of others; e.g. The EYEBORG
Rights of the Supplier and Installer • The rights that the Suppliers and Installers of prosthete’s and orthots have: • The right to develop, research and install prosthete’s and orthots. • The right to be free from imposed legal liabilites, except where neglagence is shown.
Responsibilities of the EngeneeringProfeesion • The responsibilites of the engeneering profession essentaily entail two main responsibilities: • To construct new or update old environments to be cyborg friendly; e.g. Wheel chair ramps. • To raise public awareness, on a national level, about cyborgs and what challenges need to be over come.
