  1. Upgrade and Physics Coordination Meeting Physics Performance Studies for the Upgrades Jan 20, 2012 • Meeting with representativesfrom the three TDR upgrade projects (Pixels, HCAL and L1-Trig) and the two Task Forces (Phase II Track-rigger and Forward Calorimetry), the upgrade cross-organization coordinators (Offline, Computing and PPD), and the and POGs/PAG conveners • Proposed Agenda • Intro and goals for the meeting (10min) • To overview status/plans for simulation work in support of the TDRs and TFs, with main focus on TDRs, and to discuss physics benchmarks and goals for follow-up Workshop Meeting in April • Phase 1 upgrades will be implemented 2016-2018, but must perform THROUGH LS3 • The physics program in the year 2016, 2018, 2020, 2024 cannot be fully defined, so justification for upgrades must be established by • “generic” performance improvement for upgraded detector compared to (degraded) present detector) – studies with simulation of objects (particle gun, jets…) • Benchmark with a limited few physics channels (two per TDR?) which are representative of the gains expected • Simulation must have future-realistic PU conditions. Benchmark with a limited set of conditions to allow comparison of present and pre/post LS2 periods: • 1E34@25ns ~ 5E33@50ns ~ 25 PU ~ 2012 conditions • 2E34@25ns ~ 1E34@50ns ~ 50 PU • 4E34@25ns ~ 2E34@50ns ~ 100 PU • Benchmark the present and the upgraded detectors

  2. Reports from Upgrade Projects (80min) • TDRs : Pixel/HCAL/L1Trigger(20min each including discussion) • Task Forces : Track-Trigger /Forward Calorimetry(10min each) • Brief summary of the upgrade concept and target benefits • Timescale and goals for the TDR • Status of simulation code (fastsim/mixedsim/fullsim) and studies. What outstanding issues? • Discuss physics benchmarks and requests for Physics Coordination • Reports from Physics Coordination (30min) • Status of studies and issues with current data/MC at high-PU • Issues for simulation/reconstruction, L1/HLT, physics analyses • Can present analyses and high-PU studies provide benchmarks andbe extended to higher pile-up to provide reference for current detector performance (eg high-PU performance task force…) with MC, data-mixing… • Proposal for physics benchmark channels • Specific to each TDR? Common across the detector upgrades? • What outstanding questions/work needed to establish a short list of physics benchmark channels • Discussion (30min to complete in 2.5hr) • Focus the near-term efforts on the TDRs – what needs to be done? • Meanwhile – ongoing efforts for TFs (capitalizes on TDR studies?) • How to proceed towards common code/releases and production • Goals for a workshop in early April, and what has to happen between now and then
