NCCTM Background • NCCTM State High School Mathematics Contests • The State Mathematics Contest was initiated in 1979 to provide state level competition in comprehensive mathematics for those students who had excelled in regional contests held earlier across the state. Under the sponsorship of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, regional winners are invited to the NC School of Science and Mathematics to determine the top mathematics students in the state. • The State Contest expanded to include state finals in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. Results from three regional final sites are used to determine the top performers in the three subjects.
NCCTM Regional Contest in our Area: UNC-Charlotte UNC Charlotte Super Competition- It's an annual math competition that occurs on the 1st Monday of March. It is the regional competition for the North Carolina State High School Mathematics Contest. They have a Algebra 2 contest and a comprehensive contest which is a mixture of algebra, geometry, algebra 2, and pre-calculus. Students can participate in the algebra 2 contest only if they took algebra 2 that school year. The competitions occurs at the same time so you have to choose between algebra 2 and comprehensive. If you are in the top 8% of the contestants in the Comprehensive exam you can then move to the North Carolina State High School Mathematics Contest Finals. If you are in the top 10% in the Algebra 2 contest you advance to the State Finals. The top public school team is given a trophy. The exams are 60 minutes and multiple choice.
