Treats, Team Building, and Terrific Training Amy Mitchell, Associate Director of Admission, Emerson College Phil Moreno, Director of West Coast Recruitment, Dickinson College
What to Expect? • Intro Amy and Phil (background, experience) • Build a fun, but meaningful training retreat • Regional Admissions Counselor Training • Engage your millennial new hires? • Creating a training program and reward system that works!
The Magic word Game *You each have a necklace and were handed a word *You can’t say this word throughout the session *If someone says your magic word, collect their necklace *If you say your magic word, you must give up your necklace *You can trick others into saying your word *The winner is the one with the most necklaces at the end
The workforceThe good, the bad and the ugly • Pros at multi-tasking/easily distracted • Knows everything there is to know about social media/might find you irrelevant • Tech savvy/easily frustrated if their office isn’t up to par with technology • Willing to work hard/needs instant gratification and recognition • Focused on work and life balance/less willing to work those long hours • Very team focused/ can waste time chatting • Expect transparency/overly high expectations of what they should know • Looking for career advancement/often expect it too soon
Some training stats that are scary • Only 28% of offices have a formal leadership development program • 71% of millennials will leave a job within two years if they don’t feel like their leadership skills are being developed. • On average it costs $24,000 to replace a staff member • 69% expect to be leaders in five years • 60% want training to develop their leadership skills
How to Keep ‘em • 75% of our workforce will be millennials by 2025 • Offer variety and new tasks to keep staff interested • Ask for weekly goals to provide targets • Allow them to help with your social media strategy • Implement a milestone reward program to recognize staff as they reach their goals (much like a hotel rewards program) • Allow occasional opportunities to work from home • Be as honest as possible and make information available to staff • Create a clear roadmap for moving up in their careers
So what do we Do? • Microlearning…create 15 minute brief training exercises to develop skills or use an outside training source like 21Mill • Make training accessible via a social media platform • Create clear expectations and compliment staff when they meet them • Embrace technology during your training • Embrace games and videos during training • Provide fun team building activities
Grab Bag Skits • This is a great way to teach public speaking and do a little team building at the same time. • We need four volunteers
Don’t Forget your Regionals/Support Staff • Invest in tools to keep them engaged (Skype, Slack, etc.) • Make sure they have access to meetings • Schedule regular visits to campus, but also visit them on their home turfs • Use Tripcast for fun photos during travel. • Be inclusive! • Having a pizza party? Send a gift card. • Going out for cocktails? Send a bottle of wine. • Remember their birthdays and special occasions by mailing something. • Don’t leave them out of social media…find a way to include them.
One more fun retreat game • Human bingo! The first to call Bingo wins the prize!
Speaking of Prizes? • Who has the most necklaces?
