Unpacking the Science Essential Standards Life Science Structures & Functions of Living Organisms K.L.1 Compare characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and nonliving things.
Science Essential Standards K.L.1 Compare characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and nonliving things. • K.L.1.1 Compare different types of the same animal to determine individual differences within a particular type of animal. • K.L.1.2 Compare characteristics of living and nonliving things in terms of their structure, growth, changes, movement, and basic needs.
Unpacking the Science Essential Standards Physical Science Forces and Motion K.P.1 Understand the positions and motions of objects and organisms observed in the environment.
Science Essential Standards K.P.1 Understand the positions and motions of objects and organisms observed in the environment. • K.P.1.2 Give examples of different ways objects and organisms move: • Straight • Zigzag • Round and round • Back and forth • Fast and slow
Living vs. Nonliving Things • Sort the cards into two groups Cardsorts: http://scnces.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/ (Graphic Organizers) http://www.kindergartenkindergarten.com/2012/03/a-science-mini-unit-living-and-non-living.html http://www.westminstercollege.edu/pdf/education_gslp/denise_cassie.pdf
Living Things • Grow and develop • Need air, food, and water • Move • Made up of one or more cells • Carry out basic life processes • Acquire or make food • Respire (breathe) • Reproduce • React to stimuli • Eliminate waste
What misconceptions do students have about living and nonliving things? Video: http://ed-share.educ.msu.edu/PMsum02/almostsmart/AlmostSmart/Research/livmov.htm
Misconceptions • Cartoons and book characters are living things. • Computers are living things. • Use movement as the only characteristic to explain living things. • Confuse concept of real or active as alive.
Misconceptions • Confusion with dead and nonliving. • Children have different views of animal life and plant life. • Items that were once parts of living things are living things. • Items made from living things are thought to be alive.

Put X next to living things _____Tree _____Rock _____Fire _____Boy _____Wind _____Rabbit _____Cloud _____Feather _____Grass _____Mushroom _____Potato _____Leaf _____Butterfly _____Pupae _____Bear Is it Living? Explain your thinking. What “rule” or reasoning did you use to decide if something could be considered living?

Defining Characteristics of Living Things • Have students list characteristics of living things. • Select living things as examples and check off whether the characteristic matches the living thing. • Finalize a list of characteristics of living things.
Compare and contrast items to determine if they are living or nonliving

Compare & Contrast Activity 1: • Place a live object (worm, insect, plant) in a container and a replica of the object in a similar container • Have students observe the objects over time and record observations in journal Activity 2: • Have students observe and compare a real potted plant and an artificial plant using a Venn Diagram
Roll and Name • Label one cube with the words water, land, and air • Label another cube with the words living and nonliving • Have students roll the cubes and name a plant, animal, or object that fits the descriptive words land living air water living nonliving
Real or Pretend? • Compare animals in books by showing students a variety of books that include animals in their natural habitats and animals that are pretend • Show pictures of animals to students • If the animal is real, students make its sound • If the animal is a pretend animal, students put place a finger over his/her mouth
