By Ivan Hewett2:27PM GMT 27 Mar 2009 Every few decades, classical music discovers a "saviour". Sometimes it's a composer; once it was Benjamin Britten, nowadays it's John Adams and Thomas Adès. Or it might be a charismatic maestro that gives the much-needed shot in the arm; Karajan, say, or Simon Rattle. More recently, hopes have been raised (by the record companies, if nobody else) that crossover composers like LudovicoEinaudi or crossover performers like Katherine Jenkins would lead classical music out of its ghetto. But now help for classical music is coming from an altogether unexpected quarter – the back streets of Venezuela. The Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra, made up of 200 smiling tousle-haired young Venezuelan players, with its equally smiling and energetic conductor, has taken the world by storm. The praise showered on them by commentators has been ecstatic. "The saviours of classical music" is a phrase I've read more than once.
