Welcome to Chemistry! Opening Day Catalyst: Complete the Student Information Survey If you finish early, begin reading the syllabus

icebreaker • You may have noticed the last few questions were not very serious • Your task in the next three minutes: Find as many other classmates as you can who share the same superpower wish and/or want to get lost in the same place as you
Entrance Procedure • Every day you will enter class and pick up any handouts from the “Reactants” bin for your block • You will go directly to your seat and begin working on the “Catalyst” for the morning • Continue working until I call time--there will be a challenge problem to complete in case you get done early • Let’s practice!
Seating and Questions procedure • You will remain in your seat unless I have given you permission to get up • Two methods I will use when I ask a question: • I will call on someone who has raised their hand • I will select a name randomly from deck of cards that has your name on it • Calling out is not an option • Role-Playing
Hall Passes • School Policy: You are not permitted out of class during the first fifteen minutes and last fifteen minutes of class • My Policy: I do not want you leaving the room unless it absolutely cannot wait (only 1 at a time) • If you must leave: • Wait until a time when I am not speaking to the whole class • Go to the sign out sheet on the board. Write your name, destination, and the time you are leaving • Take the hall pass • Sign in when you return • I will be checking how long you were gone
Exit Procedure • Do not begin packing up and making noise when there is still time left in class • Make sure that you have all of your belongings and that your work area is clear • On your way out, place any classwork that I ask for in the “Products” bin corresponding to your block

Aug. 27th: CatalysT • Do you have the handout for the day? • Reminder: Signed syllabus sheets are due tomorrow (Wed Aug 28th) • If you have your signed sheet today, where should you put it? • Spend the next five minutes completing our icebreaker for Day 2 • Some terminology • Protons = particles with a positive charge • Electrons = particles with negative charge • Neutrons = particles with no charge • Don’t overthink it, just have some fun with it
Icebreaker • Turn over your paper to the side with the grid • Your job: • Find people in the classroom whose element matches one of the descriptions in the grid • Important: You can’t use the same person more than once • After ten minutes, we’ll see who got the most squares completed
