SOURCES OF ENERGY By Mrs. Howie
NON - RENEWABLE 3 fossil fuels: coal, oil, natural gas Uranium (nuclear energy)
COAL - Advantages Easy to transport Readily available (right now) Cheap source of energy
COAL - Disadvantages Burning and mining creates pollution Major cause of acid rain Limited source (will run out someday)
OIL - Advantages Readily available (right now) Easy to transport or store
OIL - Disadvantages Very harmful to environment when accidents occur Limited source of energy (will run out someday)
NATURAL GAS - Advantages Readily available (right now) Easy to transport and store
NATURAL GAS - Disadvantages Contains poisonous chemicals harmful to the environment Limited source of energy (will run out someday)
URANIUM - Advantages Cleaner than burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) A small amount can produce a huge amount of energy Readily available (right now)
URANIUM - Disadvantages Waste products dangerous to store Nuclear energy is dangerous to all living things Limited source of energy (will run out someday)
RENEWABLE Geothermal – heat energy from the earth’s core
RENEWABLE Solar – energy from the sun
RENEWABLE Biomass – energy from burning once- living material (e.g. wood, corn, manure)
RENEWABLE Hydropower– energy from fast moving or falling water
RENEWABLE Wind energy – using wind to turn turbines
RENEWABLE Tidal energy – energy from the movement of the ocean
GEOTHERMAL ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -always available -expensive
SOLAR ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -always available -unreliable -clean (cloudy days) -expensive to transform and store
BIOMASS ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -cheap -some pollution -recycling waste from burning
HYDROPOWER ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -will never run out -expensive to build clean power plants -must sometimes flood large areas of land to build dam
WIND ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -will never run out -unreliable (wind -clean can be absent or not strong enough
TIDAL/OCEAN ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES: -will never run out -very expensive -clean -technology is still new; don’t know much about it yet
Scientists predict that we will use up our fossil fuels in the next 70 years • SOLUTION: • Use less (conservation) so it will last longer • This will give us time to continue to research and develop our renewable energy sources so they are more affordable and can be used by more people
