Writing and Interpreting Numerical Expressions drill and practice A Powerpoint presentation by Rachel Wilson
Directions: • Each slide will consist of a numerical expression or written out expression. Use the order of operations to correctly solve each expression. When you have finished solving, hold up your white boards to show the teacher your answer. Once she has confirmed that you have gotten the correct answer, you may put your board down and wait for the next problem. • Remember: PEMDAS
3+4x5 • Answer: 23 • First multiply 4 times 5 • 4x5=20 • Then add three to the product of 4 times 5 • 3+20=23
4x(10+10) • Answer: 80 • First perform what is in the parenthesis. • 10+10=20 • Then multiply four times the sum of 10 plus 10. • 4(20)=80
(6x30)+6x7 • Answer: 222 • First perform what is in parenthesis. • 6x30=180 • Second, multiply 6x7 to follow PEMDAS • 6x7=42 • Then add the product of 6x30 plus 6x7 together. • 180+42=222
Add seven plus10 then multiply by 3 • Answer: (7+10)x3 which equals 210 • Since it says to add 7 plus 10, THEN multiply by 3 we know that (7+10) goes in parenthesis • Then put x3 because it is the last step
(8+7)x2 • Answer: 30 • Add what is in parenthesis. • 8+7=15 • Multiply the sum of 8+7 by 2 • 15x2=30
Subtract 10 minus 4 Divided by 2 • Answer: (10-4)/2 which equals 3 • Put 10 minus 4 in parenthesis followed by /2. Then solve the expression by finding out what 10-4 is. After finding the answer, divide it by 3.
4-5+3 • Answer: 2 • Solve from left to right. • 4-5 equals -1. • -1+3=2.
Seven times three minus eleven • Answer: 10 • Multiply seven by three to get twenty one. • Subtract eleven from twenty one to get ten.
Five plus two times four • Answer: 5+2x4 which equals 28. • Work from left to right. • Five plus two equals seven. • Seven times four equals twenty eight.
8-(3x2) • Answer: 2 • First, solve what is in parenthesis. • 3x2=6 • Then subtract the product of 3x2 from 8. • 8-6=2
4^2(5x2) • Answer: 160 • First perform what is in parenthesis. • 5x2=10 • Then perform the exponent of four to the second power • 4^2=16 • Lastly compute 16(10). • 16x10=160
Seven times zero minus twelve • Answer: (7x0)-12 which equals -12 • First put 7 times zero in parenthesis because multiplication comes before subtraction in PEMDAS. • (7x0) • Then put -12 behind (7x0) because it is the last operation that follows. • (7x0)-12 • Solve the expression. • (7x0)=0 • 0-12=-12
20-8+6 • Answer: 18 • First subtract eight from twenty. Remember, subtraction comes before addition. • 20-8=12 • Then add six to the answer you got for 20-8 • 12+6=18
