1. The Parable of the Unprofitable Servants Luke 17:7-10
2. Setting Jesus is teaching His disciples about attitudes they need to avoid to be a disciple
Lk 17:1-2
Avoid giving offense
Lk 17:3-4
Avoid being unforgiving
3. Setting The disciples response to His teaching
Lk 17:5
“Increase our faith!”
They can’t imagine not giving offense to others and forgiving those who do offend us
The Lord replies – Lk 17:6
All you need is a little faith to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks
Not discussing miraculous powers
4. The parable Lk 17:7-9
Another master-servant parable
After the servant does one part of his work
He is not immediately rewarded
Instead he must go on and do the rest of his work
No extra appreciation is expected
The servant merely did his duty
5. The meaning of the parable Jesus points us to the meaning – Lk 17:10
His disciples are the servants
God is our master
The duties assigned us are the commands He gives us
Including avoiding giving offense to others and forgiving those who offend us
When we’ve done all the commands, we haven’t done anything special
We’ve merely done our duty
6. The parable applied You can’t earn salvation
Eph 2:4-9
After we’ve done all He commands, we’re still “unprofitable servants”
Isa 64:1-6
Whatever reward we receive is because of God’s grace, not because we have earned it
7. The parable applied We need to be obedient
“We have done that which was our duty to do”
We still have a duty (even if it will not earn salvation)
1 Cor 7:19
1 Jn 5:3
No command is too grievous
Even avoiding giving offense to others
Even forgiving those who offend us
8. Conclusion God demands obedience to His commands
We aren’t anything special when we obey
We are merely doing our duty
We haven’t earned our salvation
When the command seems difficult …
We don’t need extra faith to comply
We simply need faith and an understanding of our relationship with God
Lk 17:10
